Reduction of EPO fees

There can be a lot of official fees associated with obtaining a patent, which can be a significant cost for small and start-up companies.

The European Patent Office (EPO) recognises this and therefore offers reduced official fees to both small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) and micro enterprises (ME).

The EPO guidelines for SMEs are companies with less than 250 employees, an annual turnover of less than EUR 50 million and/or an annual balance sheet of less than EUR 43 million, while for MEs it is non-profit organisations, universities, non-legal persons, and companies that have less than 10 employees and an annual turnover of less than EUR 2 million. Furthermore, it is also a requirement that the company has submitted fewer than 5 applications within the last 5 years.
